What you are about to read is a genuine tutorial left by one of our amazing customers. They are based in the Skipton area and after trying Anchor Logs Kiln Dried Logs they will not switch back to any other supplier. Read on to find out more.
After we got our first woodburner seven years ago, everyone told us Anchor logs were best. We bought Anchor for two or three years. Then I decided to find cheaper logs, and tried three different suppliers.
I kept some Anchor birch logs in stock, and ran comparative trials.
DRYNESS
The main factor in ‘burnability’ is dryness. None of the cheaper logs were as dry as Anchor. Some were so wet I had to add Anchor logs to the firebox to get them to burn. Wetness adds to cost: (a) you have to burn more logs to get the same heat, (b) you need to keep air controls fully open to burn wet logs and thus a lot of heat goes straight up the flue, (c) wet logs produce more soot – extra costs later for chimney cleaning (and more smoke, which can annoy neighbours). As for producing heat, we sometimes had to put the central heating on!
SPECIFICATION
Anchor Logs are what they say they are. From other suppliers I got deliveries of ‘hardwood’ which contained softwood. Even if this burns well (mostly, it didn’t) you’ll be fiddling about adjusting the air controls, since hard and soft burn at different rates.
SHAPE AND SIZE
The Anchor birch I had was (a) mostly cut to a standard length and (b) mostly straight pieces. From other suppliers, amongst their logs I got twigs, branches, fence posts, bits of pallet, lumps of mud, etc. Does that matter if it all burns? Actually, yes – because stuff like this creates more voids in a bag. In other words – a bag of Anchor contains more actual wood than a bag of brand X.
CONSISTENCY
Anchor logs are more or less the same whenever you buy them. I didn’t find that with other suppliers – a not-so-bad delivery might be followed a couple of months later by something worse. (As well, on one occasion – non-standard size bags, but at the standard-bag price).
CONCLUSION
It’s not difficult to buy logs at less cost. But after comparing to other suppliers, I decided to buy only from Anchor Logs – you get more actual heat produced for the money you spend.
The Ultimate Guide to Cooking with Anchor Logs’ Wood Varieties
Outdoor Cooking Logs in West Yorkshire
Whether you’re a seasoned chef or a weekend BBQ enthusiast, the choice of wood used in cooking can transform a simple meal into a gourmet experience. Anchor Logs specialises in providing premium-quality logs online, catering to a diverse range of culinary applications. If you’re looking for Outdoor Cooking Logs in West Yorkshire, our selection includes Silver Birch, Oak, and Ash. Each offering unique flavours and benefits to elevate your cooking. Let’s delve into the characteristics of these woods and how they can enhance your dishes, from the fiery heart of pizza ovens to the smoky essence of open fire cooking and asado grills.
Silver Birch: The Quick and Aromatic Choice
Silver Birch is renowned for its ability to burn quickly and hot, making it the perfect choice for cooking vegetables and lighter meats such as chicken. Its high resin content imparts a subtly sweet, smoky flavour, enhancing the natural taste of your food. For those seeking an intense heat for their pizza ovens, our ‘smaller logs‘ and ‘Pizza logs‘ of Silver Birch offer an unmatched efficiency, ensuring your pizzas have the crisp, delicious crusts and perfectly melted toppings every time. Our log nets also contain silver birch, so if you don’t need quite as many logs or you want to be able to move the logs around more easily, Silver Birch log nets might be your answer.
Oak: The Slow-Burning Heavyweight
Oak logs are the backbone of slow cooking and smoking. Their dense, hard structure allows for a slow, consistent burn, emitting a rich smoke that infuses beef, pork, and other red meats with a depth of flavour unmatched by any other wood. Oak’s robustness makes it ideal for long cooking sessions, ensuring your meats are not only cooked to perfection but also imbued with a complex, smoky character.
Ash: The Versatile Performer
Ash wood is a chef’s best friend, offering a hot and clean burn with minimal smoke, making it suitable for a wide array of foods, including fish, pizzas, and vegetables. Its versatility is unmatched, providing a neutral base that enhances the food’s natural flavours without overpowering them. Whether you’re grilling a delicate fish or baking a pizza, ash wood ensures your dishes are cooked evenly and taste fantastic.
Cooking Applications: Outdoor Cooking Logs in West Yorkshire
Pizza Ovens
For the pizza aficionados, our ‘Pizza logs’ and Silver Birch ‘smaller logs’ are designed to achieve the high temperatures required for authentic, wood-fired pizzas. These woods provide a quick, even heat, giving your pizzas a perfect char and a flavour that can’t be achieved with any other cooking method. Pizza ovens should try our pizza oven logs – though please make sure your pizza oven is wood fired, rather than gas powered.
Cooking Over Burnt Down Charcoal
Oak wood is your go-to for cooking over burnt down charcoal, offering a slow burn and aromatic smoke ideal for smoking and slow-cooking meats. Alternatively, ash provides a cleaner, hotter burn for grilling, making it perfect for vegetables and fish, leaving them with a crispy exterior and juicy interior.
Open Fire Cooking
Embrace the traditional method of open fire cooking with our Silver Birch, which offers a quick and high heat ideal for smaller cuts of meat and skewers. For larger gatherings, oak and ash provide longer cooking times and a variety of flavours, ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Asado Grills
There are some beautiful Asado grills out there, including this one from Sommerset Grills. Oak’s robust flavour pairs beautifully with the traditional asado cooking style, offering a smoky depth to your meats that is simply irresistible. Ash, with its versatile flavour profile, is perfect for enhancing the taste of various meats and vegetables cooked on asado grills.
Choosing the Right Wood
Selecting the right wood for Outdoor Cooking Logs in West Yorkshire depends on the food you’re cooking and your chosen method. Consider the cooking time, desired flavour, and heat requirement when choosing between Silver Birch, Oak, and Ash. The size of the wood, from ‘smaller logs’ to ‘Pizza logs’, also plays a crucial role in managing the temperature and intensity of the heat.
Conclusion
The right choice of wood can elevate your cooking to new heights, imparting flavours that enhance the natural taste of your ingredients. Anchor Logs offers a premium selection of Silver Birch, Oak, and Ash, catering to all your culinary needs and ensuring your dishes are not only cooked to perfection but are also bursting with flavour.

Weight vs Volume
Because real wood fuels (Kiln Dried Logs) can contain water, log suppliers are not permitted by UK law to sell wood based on weight, instead, Kiln Dried Logs are usually sold by volume. All packaging volumes used by Anchor Logs are based on a loose volume equivalent measure.
Beware of sellers offering logs by weight – you could end up paying for a lot of water! Our Kiln Dried Logs bags are very good value for money.
